We work with the private sector in markets as diverse as manufacturing (eg pharmaceutical and automotive) and entertainment and leisure (eg games development and tourist attractions), to effect organisational change and improvement through people.
The challenges facing private sector organisations are greater than they have been for some time. Businesses are used to the commercial imperative to deliver better value using the same resources so as to consistently improve the bottom line. But with the growth of strong competition from economies around the world, the challenge of increasing energy costs, and a looming global recession, the context in which they do that is now much more testing.
Closer to home, the picture is just as tough. With banks less willing to provide credit, it’s crucial for organisations to stay on top of their financial game, and demographic changes (including an ageing population, and the emergence of Generation Y) mean it’s hard to recruit and retain the best people in the ‘tried and trusted’ ways.
In times like these, knowledge management, innovation and responsiveness become even more important. Leadership is crucial, and the ability to create a culture within an organisation that can survive, stand up to, and possibly even flourish in these times, is imperative.
That’s a huge challenge, especially in a time of increasingly constrained resources. Our job is to lighten that load and to help clients find a way to do what they need to do. That might be by working with senior teams to create strategies for survival, or by designing and delivering innovative culture change and people development programmes that enable organisations to successfully navigate through volatile times. And sadly, sometimes we do it by working with HR teams to manage downsizing programmes. But even when this is the only option, it’s possible to do it in a way that protects business interests while supporting and meeting the needs of those people affected.
